intergalactic planetary

one can draw so much inspiration from what cannot be seen with the naked eye...

it's really hard to avert your gaze off these images because there's so much to notice. from such obscure shapes to the unexpected & magical colors that these gaseous clouds give off...there seriously can't be anything as amazing (besides an exploding volcano. or chocolate flavored pinkberry.)

I was never really in to astronomy. the only milky ways I'm interested in are the chocolate kinds. still, I can't deny how fascinated I am by the fact that millions of miles away are these planets and other galaxies that the avergage person has no idea about, yet we find inspiration from them in everyday things. and now, especially in fashion.

definitely the ring leader for this galactic trend is Peter Pilotto (comprised of designers, Peter Pilotto and Christopher de Vos) with their 08/09 collection:

I love that there are no limits with mixing patterns and colors here. still keeping in theme with the unexpectedness of the galaxy. but still you can take just one piece and still stand-out. the new fall 09 line is inspired by the Big-Bang and you can watch the video here.

Risto Bimbiloski is another master at taking space age prints and making them into wearble works of art for men and women:

quite less literal is SHABAD, taking the shapes and colors of the galaxy and translating that to a tye-dye version. so this isn't like the print-making we see in Pilotto or Bimbiloski but you still get the impression that you're looking at something of cosmic formation.

shop the rest of the collection here.

Christopher Kane also uses the cloud print for this lustfut sheer jacket at Opening Ceremony

shop it here.

soooo all this galaxy talk put me in a Beasite Boys mood, so here it is...INTERGALACTICCCC

disrupting social order

I love art. especially when it forces me to think critically. this is partly due to the fact that I am a comm. major & also studying sociology so I love over-analyzing anything & everything to the point where that thing makes no more sense...

anyway I stumbled upon this amazing tape sculpture, which reminded me a lot of the paper maché-ing my art class has consumed me with. taking inspiration from the wonderful Claes Oldenburg, we made sculptures of random, everyday objects. the idea of blowing up a hamburger, for example, to the size of a house is quite insane but it's the simplicity of the art that really makes his work so intriguing. you would never walk by a giant hamburger and not stop to really look at it, right?

so recently, I found these images of tape sculptures that look real, but taken in to context, they obviously aren't. like, a fire hydrant in the middle of a forest. I took a great interest in this type of art and was led to Mark Jenkins' homepage where he designs tons of random sculptures that, in a way, play tricks on us. he sculpts human bodies, puts clothes on them, and places them in the most bizarre positions out on the streets. when passerby see the bodies, they're really taken aback and can't stop looking at them. it's quite hilarious watching these videos because I'm sure I'd react the same way if I saw a man whose head was stuck in a wall.

I don't really know where I'm going with this whole blog post because I have a ton other paper assignments to finish up (fml!) but I just thought I'd share some amazing pieces of art.

psychadelic

we made prints (sort of like stamps) in art class and I just had to jump on the opportunity to reproduce one of my favorite images of Twiggy, aka my favorite '60s/'70s icon. that, and I thought it would be insane to see how well I could trace the infamous eyelashes out on the stamp. here's how it turned out:

seriously, if I were part of this generation I'd have my lashes drawn on everyday, 24/7

black is the new...black?

for an upcoming issue of V magazine, Sasha Pivovarova and Heidi Mount

when I first saw this image, I thought what was the point of this? my mind immediately turned to the countless images of blackface that were so popular in the 1900s, one CENTURY ago.

though I cannot relate with the black public, I can relate to what it means to have your "race" physically broken-down and socially constructed. asians went through this same shit with yellowface in which white actors packed on the eyeliner to appear more "oriental." this, too was done back in the day so why have we suddenly reverted to discrimination? aren't we supposed to be moving forward?

this image from american apparel haunts me for some odd reason. I first saw this ad in one of my comm classes last year and literally, could not stop staring at it. again, WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THIS? fashion, or not, this concept of painting faces will never resonate with me. arguing that one is done more "tastefully" than the other is barely a reason to justify blackface, or yellowface, anycolorface. it's just ridiculous to me. the day when models of color put on whiteface is the day I'll finally be able to drink again (remember, I have panreatitis? hahaha)

let me know what you guys think! is it acceptable, fashionable? or just plain bonkers?

the sartorialist

october 22, 2009

the sartorialist book signing
an unforgettable night.
it made my life (almost) complete.

scott schuman is seriously one of the nicest people (famous figures) I have ever met, and I'm sure everyone that's attended a book signing can say the same.

each and every photo is so special.

free wine! and lots of desserts :)
p.s. do you like my a.wang inspired braid?

the crowd was so different from the typical LA vibe that I get every time I'm in hollywood. it was so refreshing to be part of a crowd that was (for the most part) so fashionable and cultured.

there were, however, a ton of aspiring bloggers that want to be "the next sartorialist"...please lol

more pictures to come soon! (aka once my friend uploads them onto facebook haha)

EDIT: MORE PICS!

scott and I sharing a moment :)

more rouge?

so here I am watching the season 3 dvd box set of Beverly Hills, 90210 wondering if any '90s trends will come back. I open my laptop and boom. my questions are answered. coincidentally the latest post from Forever 21's blog, The Skinny, featured "berry dark lips," the look of the season. it's no wonder why I've been contemplating buying dark lipstick-I see it everywhere, but most recently on Beverly Hills, which is funny because that was...oh, 10 years ago? what other than the '90s exemplified the beauty of taking rouge to another level..

case in point: Brenda Walsh

are we getting '90s fever? I think I am. it's better than having swine flu.

here are some new inspirations for both you and me. ALSO WhoWhatWear has great advice on tackling this look, where to buy the perfect shade, etc. etc. here!

it's britney bitch

once was simply not enough. I HAD to see the circus tour again, this time in LA. I missed my opportunity to see her in Paris so this was my last chance. and it was sooo worth spending another $150 on a ticket. though I knew what to expect, the show still had me screaming on the top of my lungs - it helped that our seats were freakin amazin, 3 rows from the floor! plus, I was a taaaad drunker than last time, and by "a taaad" I mean A LOT. haha. I want to re-live it. but I guess for now, pictures will do!

walking in heels

one of my biggest pet peeves is when girls can't walk in their heels. it's a different story, however, when the girl is wearing shoes straight off the runway.

hello

for PR homework I read about how there are at least 175,000 new blogs a day. I suppose my blog will contribute to this large number.

thinking about blogs makes me look back on my Xanga days, so long ago I can't even remember my username(s). I wish I saved some of those entries because I updated that frequently and it held a lot of high school memories, if I remember correctly...not that I care for those anymore but it'd be nice especially for when I'm procrastinating. it's actually bugging me that I don't remember any of this, even with my old livejournal accounts, I have no idea how to access any of my old entries. I used to like doing that freshman year of college, I guess just to reflect on the old days; but even if I hate thinking about how square my high school experience was, I think it would be interesting to look back at those entries from time to time. just a thought...
